DISAPPOINTED: Liz Klimas Journalist for TheBlaze States Theory as Fact

I was disappointed to see her use of “fallacy of presumption”, in what was otherwise an excellent article titled “Pluto’s Close-Up Photo Reveals Something Scientists Say ‘Could Be a Game Changer’” by Liz Klimas, Journalist for TheBlaze.com.

Below is the excerpt that bothers me:

“Scientists said the peaks – seemingly pushed up from Pluto’s subterranean bed of ice – appeared to be a mere 100 million years old. Pluto itself is 4.5 billion years old.”

pluto-planetIt may seem trite, but the first sentence seems to be a direct quote from unnamed scientists, as such it is good journalism. However, the second sentence: “Pluto itself is 4.5 billion years old” is the one that bugs me; particularly in light of the worldview held by a very large proportion of subscribers to the blaze.com.

My respectful suggestion to Liz Klimas would be to edit the article so that reads free of any closely held by bias, which is presented as fact, something to the following effect:

“According to many mainstream scientists, Pluto itself is 4.5 billion years old.”

Please Liz Klimas, as a TheBlaze.com subscriber, don’t present theories to me as fact.

True science is something that can be observed, measured, and repeated. The study of the heavens, and the study of things buried under the ground and under the sea, is the analysis of “snapshots” of evidence that can be interpreted in many ways. Conclusions about these matters can only be made with a peppering of bias, whether that be with a bias toward creationism, or atheism, or whatever is in between. There was only one Person who was present when Pluto was formed, and He is the one who is the final authority, and for that matter the only authority, that can be trusted on the age of this planet/rock/ice ball/death Star or whatever it is :)
